Peniche, Portugal (Wednesday, October 21, 2009) - Orgainisers of the Rip Curl Pro woke this morning to massive destruction of the main contest site at Supertubes. Despite building sand levies over the past two days double up waves between 3 and 4 meters washed through the site around 4am this morning. The force of the waves caused damage to almost all of the contest inferstructure. Huge shipping containers being used for offices and storage were actually floating throught the site as the water washed through. Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage has been cased by the huge seas to audio, video and computer equipment as well as structural to the buildings..Luckly the contest has a back up site at Baleal which could be the venue of todays contest. ..The Rip Curl Pro Search which will culminate the European leg of the 2009 ASP Men's World Tour in the wave abundant Portuguese region of Peniche was called off again today due strong onshore winds, driving rain and rough surf. The contest is hosting the world's best surfers from October 19 - 30, 2009 and will run when conditions are favorable...Event No. 9 of 10 on the 2009 ASP World Tour, the Rip Curl Pro Search is poised to deliver high drama with projected sizable swells setting the scene for a possible ASP World Title showdown and several requalification campaigns...Mick Fanning (AUS), 28, former ASP World Champion (2007) and current ASP World No. 1, has been on a rampage during the back half of the season, claiming back-to-back wins in California and France before taking the ASP ratings' lead last week in Spain.
